<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Next, the school receives floor plans and renderings that show how the new environment will look. Administrators and staff can review the proposed design, ask questions, and suggest changes. After the plans are approved, Inventionland Education provides a final quote for the build.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">T</span>hat was clear at the 2026 Inventionland Education National Invention Contest, held at Inventionland world headquarters in Pittsburgh. Elementary and middle school students presented original product ideas to professional judges. They explained the problems they wanted to solve, showed how their inventions worked, and answered questions about their thinking.</p>

<p>They stood in front of adults and shared ideas they had researched, tested, revised, and practiced. They learned how to handle feedback. They saw that their work had value. They also saw that invention is not always neat or easy. Good ideas take time. They require teamwork, patience, and the willingness to keep improving.</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Mia Mertz and Madison Mulato are two of those students. Their invention, the No Cry<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Hair Tie, started with a problem many people know well. Traditional hair ties can pull, snag, and hurt when they are taken out. Mia and Madison wanted to create a better option.</span></p>

They designed a smoother hair tie made to come out more comfortably. After working through the Inventionland Education process, improving their idea, and presenting their product, the No Cry<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Hair Tie earned a licensing agreement and is now sold online.</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">That kind of experience can change how students see their own ideas. Engineering does not always start with a large machine, a bridge, or a complicated piece of software.</span>Sometimes it starts with a daily frustration that someone decides to fix.</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Olivia Adams and Samantha Preist followed a similar path with their invention, The Untie Not. Their product was created to solve another familiar problem: shoelaces that keep coming untied. Their small, lightweight device helps keep a knot secure without changing the shoe itself.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">After earning first place in the middle school division of the national invention contest, Olivia and Samantha’s product moved into final development and is being prepared for a global release. Their work shows how far a student&#8217;s idea can go when it is supported by planning, feedback, teamwork, and persistence.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">These stories are important because they give students a more accurate picture of engineering. It is not only about formulas, machines, or advanced technology. It often begins with paying attention, asking better questions, testing ideas, and making adjustments when something does not work the first time.</span></p>

When young women see other young women creating products, earning licensing agreements, and preparing inventions for the marketplace, engineering becomes easier to picture as part of their own future.</span></p>

With backgrounds in education, product development, entrepreneurship, marketing, business leadership, and retail, the judges brought practical knowledge and thoughtful feedback to each presentation. Their job was not only to help choose the winners, but also to encourage students as they practiced creative thinking, problem-solving, and public speaking.</span></p>

She has taught courses including Accounting, Marketing, Graphic Design, Entrepreneurship, and Introduction to Business. Michele also leads Cat’s Customs, a student-run program where students design and produce custom apparel and goods. She has used the Inventionland curriculum in her own marketing classes, helping students turn ideas into recognized projects.</span></p>

Through his work with schools, Nathan has helped create immersive Innovation Labs® where students can collaborate, build prototypes, and learn by doing. He has also developed more than 90 products sold worldwide and holds five patents as a third-generation inventor.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The process starts with a discovery meeting. This first conversation provides school leaders with an overview of Inventionland Education and helps define the project&#8217;s scope. It is also the time to talk through timing, budget, goals, and the types of spaces being considered. Whether a district is transforming a classroom, media center, library, STEM room, or multi-purpose area, this step helps identify what the finished environment needs to accomplish.</span></p>

Inventionland Education reviews client-provided photos, videos, and floor plans to understand the existing space. The team reviews early design concepts and shapes a direction that fits the school’s needs, instructional goals, student population, and available square footage. Once the design agreement is issued and signed, the creative work moves forward.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The next step is the presentation of concepts. During this phase, school leaders review floor plans, renderings, and visual design ideas before manufacturing begins. This is where the immersive environment starts to feel real. The design may include themed areas, graphics, flexible seating, collaboration zones, maker spaces, presentation areas, whiteboard surfaces, and custom features that support creativity and project-based learning. After review and approval, the build quote is issued and signed.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">In the build phase, engineering is finalized, products are manufactured, furniture is ordered, and the installation window is reserved. This allows districts to plan ahead while Inventionland Education prepares the pieces that will bring the environment together.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Held over two days at Inventionland world headquarters in Pittsburgh, May 19 and 20, the national contest gave students the opportunity to share their work with professional judges and celebrate the kind of hands-on learning that can turn a classroom idea into something meaningful.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The event also celebrated the educators and schools that encourage students to ask questions, test ideas, revise their work, and proudly share solutions with others.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">On Tuesday, May 19, elementary school teams presented their inventions in the elementary competition.</span></p>

This special pan changes color as you cook meat, so you know exactly when it’s done. It includes five different color progressions for rare, medium-rare, medium, medium-well, and well done, and has settings for pork, chicken, and beef.</span></p>

This is a specially made football with a “super fin” and a propeller inside so it can fly further and faster and make a perfect throw every time.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The elementary student winners set a new standard for the competition, as all three came from Ehrman Crest Elementary, part of the Seneca Valley School District in Pennsylvania. This made the school’s showing at the national contest especially memorable, since the school&#8217;s grand prize included a new 3D printer to support future design and prototyping.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Industry-leading judges for the elementary competition, Stephanie Buzzatto, Michele Butler, and Nathan Field, reviewed each student group&#8217;s presentation before selecting the top three teams.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">The competition continued on Wednesday, May 20, at the middle school level. Grove City Area Middle School took home the grand school prize, a <b>Cricut Explore 5</b>, after two of its student teams finished in the top three.</span></p>

This ingenious invention helps organize closets by sliding onto the hanger&#8217;s head, holding clothing in place for less stress and no mess.</span></p>

Playful Paws Harness<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>is a lightweight and breathable dog harness made from soft mesh and smooth silk materials, designed to reduce frizz and prevent tangling.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Middle school judges, including Dr. Tiffany Nix, Ann Marie Weiss, and John Bitzer, evaluated the presentations and selected three winning teams from a competitive field of young innovators.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">For every student group that participated, the contest was about more than earning an award medal or a top placement. It was an opportunity to communicate an idea, explain a problem, present a solution, and see what is possible when creativity is paired with persistence.</span></p>

For students, it creates a learning experience that feels relevant and memorable. They aren’t just answering questions. They’re learning to ask better ones and gain agency in their learning, since it’s their ideas they are working on.</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">This course asks teachers to step into a role that looks different from a traditional classroom. Instead of leading from the front, they facilitate, question, and support. Students work in small groups, identify real problems, and develop solutions using a proven, real-world 9-step invention method. Teachers facilitate that process, keep teams on track, and create a setting where students feel comfortable crafting new inventions, innovations, and ideas, while learning from failure. At Inventionland Education, we call this “failing forward.”</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">At the elementary level, that often means helping younger student groups build confidence in their thinking. Teachers guide them through early ideation, encourage curiosity, and show them how to collaborate. At the middle school level, the work becomes more focused. Students begin refining ideas, building prototypes, and presenting their concepts. Teachers help manage creativity with structure, pushing students to think through details and communicate clearly. In high school classrooms, the expectations increase again. Students develop more advanced solutions and present them with greater detail. Teachers act as facilitators and mentors, helping students prepare for real-life feedback.</span></p>

Managing multiple student teams, each working on a different idea, takes flexibility, guidance, and even patience.
