Step 1: Discovery Meeting

For several young women from Grove City Middle School, that work has gone well beyond a classroom assignment.

Mia Mertz and Madison Mulato are two of those students. Their invention, the No Cry Hair Tie, started with a problem many people know well. Traditional hair ties can pull, snag, and hurt when they are taken out. Mia and Madison wanted to create a better option.

Their solution was practical and easy to understand. They designed a smoother hair tie made to come out more comfortably. After working through the Inventionland Education process, improving their idea, and presenting their product, the No Cry Hair Tie earned a licensing agreement and is now sold online.

That kind of experience can change how students see their own ideas. Engineering does not always start with a large machine, a bridge, or a complicated piece of software.Sometimes it starts with a daily frustration that someone decides to fix.

Olivia Adams and Samantha Preist followed a similar path with their invention, The Untie Not. Their product was created to solve another familiar problem: shoelaces that keep coming untied. Their small, lightweight device helps keep a knot secure without changing the shoe itself.

After earning first place in the middle school division of the national invention contest, Olivia and Samantha’s product moved into final development and is being prepared for a global release. Their work shows how far a student’s idea can go when it is supported by planning, feedback, teamwork, and persistence.

These stories are important because they give students a more accurate picture of engineering. It is not only about formulas, machines, or advanced technology. It often begins with paying attention, asking better questions, testing ideas, and making adjustments when something does not work the first time.

For girls and young women, examples like Mia, Madison, Olivia, and Samantha matter. They show that invention is not out of reach. It can begin in a middle school classroom with a smallteam, a useful idea, and the willingness to keep improving it.

International Women in Engineering Day is a reminder that students need to see themselves in these fields early. When young women see other young women creating products, earning licensing agreements, and preparing inventions for the marketplace, engineering becomes easier to picture as part of their own future.

Mia, Madison, Olivia, and Samantha are not waiting until adulthood to explore invention. They are already doing the work. Their stories show how classroom learning can become something tangible, useful, and ready for the world outside school.

Over two days, student teams shared original products they developed through the Inventionland Education curriculum. Each group explained the problem they set out to solve, how their invention works, how they built their prototype, and why their idea could be useful.

Six judges helped make the experience meaningful for the students. With backgrounds in education, product development, entrepreneurship, marketing, business leadership, and retail, the judges brought practical knowledge and thoughtful feedback to each presentation. Their job was not only to help choose the winners, but also to encourage students as they practiced creative thinking, problem-solving, and public speaking.

Elementary School Contest, May 19, 2026

The elementary school contest was held on Tuesday, May 19, with judges Michele Butler, Nathan Field, and Stephanie Buzzatto.

Michele Butler brought more than 26 years of classroom experience as a business and career-focused educator. She has taught courses including Accounting, Marketing, Graphic Design, Entrepreneurship, and Introduction to Business. Michele also leads Cat’s Customs, a student-run program where students design and produce custom apparel and goods. She has used the Inventionland curriculum in her own marketing classes, helping students turn ideas into recognized projects.

Nathan Field, Executive Director of Inventionland Education, brings more than 25 years of experience in industrial design and product development. Through his work with schools, Nathan has helped create immersive Innovation Labs® where students can collaborate, build prototypes, and learn by doing. He has also developed more than 90 products sold worldwide and holds five patents as a third-generation inventor.

Stephanie Buzzatto, Marketing Manager at Davison Design and Development, added experience in marketing, branding, and visual communication. Her work includes digital media, design, catalogs, email campaigns, sales materials, and visual content. Through her experience supporting Davison Design and Development, Dorrance Publishing, and Inventionland Education, Stephanie helped students understand how clear messaging can make an invention easier to grasp and more appealing to audiences.

Together, the elementary judges used their industry expertise to select the winners and provide feedback. Their positive approach to student interaction helped students build confidence in presenting their ideas to the panel.

Middle School Contest, May 20, 2026

The middle school contest was held on Wednesday, May 20, with judges John Bitzer, Ann Marie Weiss, and Dr. Tiffany Nix.

John F. Bitzer III brought decades of business leadership and entrepreneurial experience. As former President and Chief Executive Officer of ABARTA, Inc., John helped lead a multigenerational family business with interests in Coca-Cola distribution, media, energy, and investments. His career, which began in sales and evolved into executive leadership, set a strong example for students of persistence, responsibility, and long-term thinking.

Dr. Tiffany Nix, Assistant Superintendent of Penn-Trafford School District, brought a strong education perspective to the judging panel. She is known for supporting learning spaces that move beyond traditional classrooms and give students more opportunities to create, collaborate, and solve problems.

Ann Marie Weiss, Vice President of Sales at Jokari Corporation, brings experience in retail product development, licensing, and consumer products. Jokari has helped bring inventor ideas to market, and Ann Marie gave students insight into what makes a product useful, practical, and appealing to customers.

The middle school judges helped students connect their classroom work to the broader world of business, education, retail, and leadership. Their feedback showed how an invention can start with a student’s idea and grow through planning, teamwork, and presentation.

By bringing these judges together, the 2026 Inventionland Education National Invention Contest gave students more than a chance to compete. It gave them the opportunity to present their ideas to professionals who understand what it takes to develop, explain, and improve a new product.

Held over two days at Inventionland world headquarters in Pittsburgh, May 19 and 20, the national contest gave students the opportunity to share their work with professional judges and celebrate the kind of hands-on learning that can turn a classroom idea into something meaningful.

The event also celebrated the educators and schools that encourage students to ask questions, test ideas, revise their work, and proudly share solutions with others.

On Tuesday, May 19, elementary school teams presented their inventions in the elementary competition.

First place went to Alivia, Scotlyn, Veronica, and Elise for their invention, the Cozy Kitchen Pro Pan. This special pan changes color as you cook meat, so you know exactly when it’s done. It includes five different color progressions for rare, medium-rare, medium, medium-well, and well done, and has settings for pork, chicken, and beef.

Second place went to Stella and Maiva for Palm Tree Productions Beach Bucket. This product is made for the beach, so it’s sandproof and waterproof, with a secret compartment for valuable items like your phone or keys.

Third place was awarded to Ty, Logan, and Caleb for Rocket Football Athletics. This is a specially made football with a “super fin” and a propeller inside so it can fly further and faster and make a perfect throw every time.

The elementary student winners set a new standard for the competition, as all three came from Ehrman Crest Elementary, part of the Seneca Valley School District in Pennsylvania. This made the school’s showing at the national contest especially memorable, since the school’s grand prize included a new 3D printer to support future design and prototyping.

Industry-leading judges for the elementary competition, Stephanie Buzzatto, Michele Butler, and Nathan Field, reviewed each student group’s presentation before selecting the top three teams.

The competition continued on Wednesday, May 20, at the middle school level. Grove City Area Middle School took home the grand school prize, a Cricut Explore 5, after two of its student teams finished in the top three.

First place in the middle school competition went to Stash & Sparkle from Grove City Area Middle School. The product helps store necklaces on the go by attaching to a zipper in a purse, backpack, or other item so they don’t get lost or tangled.

 Second place was awarded to Beka and Alida for Snap & Stay, also from Grove City Area Middle School. This ingenious invention helps organize closets by sliding onto the hanger’s head, holding clothing in place for less stress and no mess.

Third place went to Genevieve, Nini, and Ellie for Playful Paws from Neshannock Middle School. Playful Paws Harness is a lightweight and breathable dog harness made from soft mesh and smooth silk materials, designed to reduce frizz and prevent tangling.

Middle school judges, including Dr. Tiffany Nix, Ann Marie Weiss, and John Bitzer, evaluated the presentations and selected three winning teams from a competitive field of young innovators.

For every student group that participated, the contest was about more than earning an award medal or a top placement. It was an opportunity to communicate an idea, explain a problem, present a solution, and see what is possible when creativity is paired with persistence.

These experiences are at the heart of Inventionland Education’s approach to learning. Through invention-based education, students learn to collaborate, think critically, build confidence, and apply STEM skills in real-world settings.
