It was not one idea, one invention, or one moment. It was generations of people willing to try something new. Farmers, builders, engineers, teachers, business owners, scientists, mechanics, artists, and everyday problem solvers all helped move the country forward.

America has always depended on people who could look at a problem and think, “There has to be a better way.”

That mindset has shaped almost every part of American life. It changed how we travel, communicate, build, farm, learn, manufacture, and care for one another. Some inventions became household names. Others solved quiet problems in factories, hospitals, schools, farms, and homes. But each one started the same way: someone noticed a need and decided to do something about it.

That same spirit is what students need today.

K-12 students are growing up in a world that changes fast. They need more than facts and test preparation. They need practice thinking through problems, working with others, developing ideas, making mistakes, improving their work, and explaining why their solution matters.

That is the heart of inventing.

Inventionland Education brings that experience into schools through hands-on curriculum, immersive learning environments, and invention-based learning. Students are not just reading about innovation. They are doing the work. They identify real problems, brainstorm solutions, build prototypes, create packaging, prepare presentations, and learn how to pitch their ideas.

For many students, that changes how they see themselves.

They begin to understand that inventing is not reserved for adults, engineers, or people in labs. It can start with a simple problem they notice at home, at school, on a sports field, or in their community. When students are given the right process and support, their ideas can become real.

That was clear at the 2026 Inventionland Education National Invention Contest, held at Inventionland world headquarters in Pittsburgh. Elementary and middle school students presented original product ideas to professional judges. They explained the problems they wanted to solve, showed how their inventions worked, and answered questions about their thinking.

The contest was more than a competition. It was a look at what happens when students are trusted to create.

They stood in front of adults and shared ideas they had researched, tested, revised, and practiced. They learned how to handle feedback. They saw that their work had value. They also saw that invention is not always neat or easy. Good ideas take time. They require teamwork, patience, and the willingness to keep improving.

That lesson fits the American story.

As the country celebrates 250 years, it is important to remember that innovation is not just part of our history. It is something students need to experience now. The next useful product, helpful tool, medical breakthrough, classroom solution, or business idea may already be taking shape in a student’s mind.

Inventionland Education helps give those students a place to start.

America was built by people who imagined better ways to live and work. The next 250 years will depend on young people learning to do the same.

It is also a good time to recognize students who are already learning those same skills in the classroom.

At Inventionland Education, students do more than talk about innovation. They learn how to spot problems, research possible answers, build prototypes, test their ideas, and explain their inventions to others.

For several young women from Grove City Middle School, that work has gone well beyond a classroom assignment.

Mia Mertz and Madison Mulato are two of those students. Their invention, the No Cry Hair Tie, started with a problem many people know well. Traditional hair ties can pull, snag, and hurt when they are taken out. Mia and Madison wanted to create a better option.

Their solution was practical and easy to understand. They designed a smoother hair tie made to come out more comfortably. After working through the Inventionland Education process, improving their idea, and presenting their product, the No Cry Hair Tie earned a licensing agreement and is now sold online.

That kind of experience can change how students see their own ideas. Engineering does not always start with a large machine, a bridge, or a complicated piece of software.Sometimes it starts with a daily frustration that someone decides to fix.

Olivia Adams and Samantha Preist followed a similar path with their invention, The Untie Not. Their product was created to solve another familiar problem: shoelaces that keep coming untied. Their small, lightweight device helps keep a knot secure without changing the shoe itself.

After earning first place in the middle school division of the national invention contest, Olivia and Samantha’s product moved into final development and is being prepared for a global release. Their work shows how far a student’s idea can go when it is supported by planning, feedback, teamwork, and persistence.

These stories are important because they give students a more accurate picture of engineering. It is not only about formulas, machines, or advanced technology. It often begins with paying attention, asking better questions, testing ideas, and making adjustments when something does not work the first time.

For girls and young women, examples like Mia, Madison, Olivia, and Samantha matter. They show that invention is not out of reach. It can begin in a middle school classroom with a smallteam, a useful idea, and the willingness to keep improving it.

International Women in Engineering Day is a reminder that students need to see themselves in these fields early. When young women see other young women creating products, earning licensing agreements, and preparing inventions for the marketplace, engineering becomes easier to picture as part of their own future.

Mia, Madison, Olivia, and Samantha are not waiting until adulthood to explore invention. They are already doing the work. Their stories show how classroom learning can become something tangible, useful, and ready for the world outside school.

Six judges helped make the experience meaningful for the students. With backgrounds in education, product development, entrepreneurship, marketing, business leadership, and retail, the judges brought practical knowledge and thoughtful feedback to each presentation. Their job was not only to help choose the winners, but also to encourage students as they practiced creative thinking, problem-solving, and public speaking.

Their feedback showed how an invention can start with a student’s idea and grow through planning, teamwork, and presentation.

By bringing these judges together, the 2026 Inventionland Education National Invention Contest gave students more than a chance to compete. It gave them the opportunity to present their ideas to professionals who understand what it takes to develop, explain, and improve a new product.

The process starts with a discovery meeting. This first conversation provides school leaders with an overview of Inventionland Education and helps define the project’s scope. It is also the time to talk through timing, budget, goals, and the types of spaces being considered. Whether a district is transforming a classroom, media center, library, STEM room, or multi-purpose area, this step helps identify what the finished environment needs to accomplish.

From there, the project moves into the design meeting. Inventionland Education reviews client-provided photos, videos, and floor plans to understand the existing space. The team reviews early design concepts and shapes a direction that fits the school’s needs, instructional goals, student population, and available square footage. Once the design agreement is issued and signed, the creative work moves forward.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-27612 size-medium_large" src="https://inventionlandeducation.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/0K7A9258-768x512.jpg" alt="Students working.
The next step is the presentation of concepts. During this phase, school leaders review floor plans, renderings, and visual design ideas before manufacturing begins. This is where the immersive environment starts to feel real. The design may include themed areas, graphics, flexible seating, collaboration zones, maker spaces, presentation areas, whiteboard surfaces, and custom features that support creativity and project-based learning. After review and approval, the build quote is issued and signed.

In the build phase, engineering is finalized, products are manufactured, furniture is ordered, and the installation window is reserved. This allows districts to plan ahead while Inventionland Education prepares the pieces that will bring the environment together.

One of the biggest advantages for schools is the short installation timeline, because Inventionland Education’s immersive environments can typically be installed in just 2-4 days. During this step, location details, timing, and shipping information are confirmed. Depending on the project, installation may be handled by Inventionland Education or by the client. Once installation and furniture setup are complete, the school will have a finished learning environment ready for students and teachers.

For many districts, this fast installation window is a major benefit. Work can often be scheduled around breaks, long weekends, professional development days, or summer periods to reduce disruption to instruction. Instead of waiting months for a traditional renovation, schools can create a space that encourages students to think, build, collaborate, test ideas, and present solutions.

The final step focuses on community relations and the grand opening. Inventionland Education can help schools plan media outreach, press releases, community engagement, ribbon cuttings, and open house events. These occasions give districts a chance to celebrate the investment and show families, staff, local leaders, and business partners how the environment supports innovation.

Inventionland Education’s immersive learning environments are more than attractive spaces. They are designed to support hands-on learning, STEM, career readiness, teamwork, communication, and creativity. With a proven process and installation in as little as 2-4 days, schools can turn ordinary rooms into places where students see themselves as inventors and solution-finders.

Held over two days at Inventionland world headquarters in Pittsburgh, May 19 and 20, the national contest gave students the opportunity to share their work with professional judges and celebrate the kind of hands-on learning that can turn a classroom idea into something meaningful.

The event also celebrated the educators and schools that encourage students to ask questions, test ideas, revise their work, and proudly share solutions with others.

On Tuesday, May 19, elementary school teams presented their inventions in the elementary competition.

The elementary student winners set a new standard for the competition, as all three came from Ehrman Crest Elementary, part of the Seneca Valley School District in Pennsylvania. This made the school’s showing at the national contest especially memorable, since the school’s grand prize included a new 3D printer to support future design and prototyping.

Industry-leading judges for the elementary competition, Stephanie Buzzatto, Michele Butler, and Nathan Field, reviewed each student group’s presentation before selecting the top three teams.

The competition continued on Wednesday, May 20, at the middle school level. Grove City Area Middle School took home the grand school prize, a Cricut Explore 5, after two of its student teams finished in the top three.

Middle school judges, including Dr. Tiffany Nix, Ann Marie Weiss, and John Bitzer, evaluated the presentations and selected three winning teams from a competitive field of young innovators.

For every student group that participated, the contest was about more than earning an award medal or a top placement. It was an opportunity to communicate an idea, explain a problem, present a solution, and see what is possible when creativity is paired with persistence.

These experiences are at the heart of Inventionland Education’s approach to learning. Through invention-based education, students learn to collaborate, think critically, build confidence, and apply STEM skills in real-world settings. In the process, they are becoming creators, presenters, and problem solvers.

Congratulations to the 2026 elementary and middle school winners, their teachers, and every student team that presented during this year’s National Invention Contest. This year’s students showed that great ideas can begin at any age.

Students need solid foundations in science, technology, engineering, and math to prepare for the future. But STEM on its own does not always suffice.

Students also need to discover.

They need to see how ideas develop and problems get solved. They need experience working with others, testing concepts, refining designs, and explaining why their ideas matter. Most importantly, they should realize they are capable of creating something original.

This is where Inventionland Education’s Innovation Science curriculum stands out.

Aimed at elementary, middle, and high school students, Innovation Science reinforces STREAM concepts while giving students a real-world framework for invention. It blends the scientific method with creativity and hands-on problem solving, helping students move beyond memorization into real application.

In the curriculum, students work in teams to invent or innovate a product. Along the way, they identify everyday problems, develop solutions, build prototypes, test ideas, and prepare presentations. They use the skills of inventors, entrepreneurs, engineers, designers, and product developers.

This is more than project-based learning for its own sake. It’s a guided process that helps students think critically, collaborate, communicate clearly, and adapt when ideas don’t work the first time.

Those moments are when real discovery happens.

A student might realize a simple frustration can spark an invention. Ateam might notice its first prototype needs improvement. A classroom could learn that creativity and science are connected parts of the same process.

For teachers, Innovation Science offers an engaging way to bring STREAM learning to life. For students, it creates a learning experience that feels relevant and memorable. They aren’t just answering questions. They’re learning to ask better ones and gain agency in their learning, since it’s their ideas they are working on.

The results speak for themselves. Several student groups using the Inventionland Education curriculum have gone beyond the classroom and earned licensing agreements for their inventions. Their ideas proved both creative and commercially viable.

With the Inventionland Education National Invention Contest, students can showcase their work on a larger stage. Inventions developed in the curriculum are showcased on the Discovery and Science Channels through the Telly Award-winning TV show Tomorrow’s World Today, giving students a chance to see their inventing process recognized globally.

That kind of experience can change how students see themselves. They’re not just learning about innovation. They’re practicing it, presenting it, and sometimes even watching it move toward the marketplace.

That is the power of discovery.

STEM gives students important tools. STREAM expands those tools by adding reading, art, and creativity. But discovery goes deeper. It gives students ownership, confidence, and a reason to care.

At Inventionland Education, the goal isn’t just to teach science, technology, engineering, and math. The goal is to help students discover what they can do with it.

In schools that use the Inventionland Education Innovation Science course, teachers guide students through a different kind of learning experience. At the elementary, middle, and high school levels, they help students think like problem solvers, work in teams, and turn ideas into reality.

This course asks teachers to step into a role that looks different from a traditional classroom. Instead of leading from the front, they facilitate, question, and support. Students work in small groups, identify real problems, and develop solutions using a proven, real-world 9-step invention method. Teachers facilitate that process, keep teams on track, and create a setting where students feel comfortable crafting new inventions, innovations, and ideas, while learning from failure. At Inventionland Education, we call this “failing forward.”

At the elementary level, that often means helping younger student groups build confidence in their thinking. Teachers guide them through early ideation, encourage curiosity, and show them how to collaborate. At the middle school level, the work becomes more focused. Students begin refining ideas, building prototypes, and presenting their concepts. Teachers help manage creativity with structure, pushing students to think through details and communicate clearly. In high school classrooms, the expectations increase again. Students develop more advanced solutions and present them with greater detail. Teachers act as facilitators and mentors, helping students prepare for real-life feedback.

What stands out across all levels is the commitment required of these educators. Managing multiple student teams, each working on a different idea, takes flexibility, guidance, and even patience. It also requires a willingness to let students take ownership of their work, even when that means stepping back and allowing them to work through difficulties.

The results speak for themselves. Students are more engaged, more invested, and more willing to take risks. Some student teams have even secured licensing agreements for their inventions, showing that the work in these classrooms can go well beyond the school building.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, it is worth commending the role these educators fulfill in making that possible. They are creating environments where students not only learn content but also apply it in purposeful ways. They are helping students build skills that carry beyond the classroom.

For schools and districts, the success of this kind of program depends on the teachers leading it. Their skill to adapt, guide, and support students is what turns a course as an experience that students remember.

National Inventors Month is a time to celebrate ideas, creativity, and the students who turn problems into solutions. At Inventionland Education, it is also an opportunity to highlight what sets the program apart. Students are not only learning about innovation. They are actually becoming inventors, with some earning real licensing agreements for their work.

Over the past two years, four student teams have taken that step from classroom concept to marketplace reality.

One of the most recognized examples is the No Cry Hair Tie, created by Mia Mertz and Madison Mulato from Grove City Middle School. Their invention solves a simple but frustrating problem. Traditional hair ties pull and snag, producing discomfort. Their design offers a smoother, pain-free alternative. After developing their idea through the applied STEM course and refining it through the invention process, the product earned a licensing agreement and is now sold online through major platforms.

Another team from Grove City Middle School, Ethan Cooke, Elijah Lawson, and Gavin Purdy, developed the Needle Guard. Athletes often lose or break the small pump needles used to inflate sports balls. Their solution protects the needle and securely stores it. Like the No Cry Hair Tie, their product moved beyond the classroom and secured a licensing agreement, showing real commercial potential. It will be available for sale this year.

In 2025, Olivia Adams and Samantha Preist added to that momentum with their invention, The Untie Not. Anyone who has dealt with constantly untied shoelaces understands the problem. Their small, lightweight device keeps knots secure without changing the shoe itself. After winning first place in the middle school division of the national competition, their product entered final development and is being prepared for a global release.

Innovation is not limited to one region. The Amazing Lid, developed through the Jordan Youth Innovation Project in partnership with student innovators overseas, addresses a global need. The design focuses on creating a coffee mug lid that adjusts for different sizes. It is now available for sale worldwide. This highlights how the same process can be applied across students in K-12 schools.

What connects all four of these teams is not just creativity, but process. Students follow the real-world 9-step inventing method that replicates how products are developed at Inventionland for its corporate and individual inventors. In the Inventionland Education class, student groups identify problems, prototype solutions, test ideas, and present their work to a panel of judges at the end of the course. The outcome is not purely a project that earns a grade. In some cases, it becomes a product that reaches the global marketplace.

For educators and school leaders, this represents a shift in what student work can look like. It moves beyond theory and into application. It shows that middle school students, when given the right structure and environment, can produce ideas with real value.

National Inventors Month is about possibility. These students show what happens when that possibility is taken seriously and supported with the right tools and expectations.

Rows of bookshelves. Fixed tables. Quiet corners designed for individual reading. While these spaces have served generations well, today’s students need more. They need environments that invite creativity, collaboration, and hands-on exploration.

That is where Inventionland Education is making a meaningful impact.

During National Library Week, it is worth rethinking what a library can be. Not just a place to consume information, but a place to create it.

In many schools, the starting point looks like the old school spaces. They use traditional layouts with limited flexibility and minimal visual engagement. These environments often struggle to support modern teaching methods like project-based learning, STEM integration, and collaborative problem-solving.

But the Inventionland Education transformation is dramatic.

In one example, a dated elementary library becomes a Storybook Forest Innovation Lab®. Instead of neutral walls and static furniture, students are surrounded by immersive, themed environments with tree structures, vibrant colors, and flexible seating. The space feels alive. It invites movement, imagination, and interaction.

Another redesign converts an outdated library into a dynamic media and reading center. Bright lighting, collaborative tables, and engaging visuals replace rigid layouts. Students can read, create, present, and work in teams all within the same space.

At the middle and high school levels, the shift continues. Traditional study areas evolve into immersive innovation Labs, designed to drive engagement and real-world problem-solving. These spaces incorporate maker elements, adaptable workstations, and technology integration that supports both independent and group work.

One of the most impactful additions is the use of dry-erase light panels. These vertical workspaces turn walls into idea generators, allowing students to sketch, iterate, and collaborate in real time. Learning becomes visible.

The result is more than a visual upgrade. It is a cultural shift.

Students are more engaged. Teachers have greater flexibility. Libraries evolve into central hubs for innovation, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning.

This National Library Week, the message is clear. Libraries are no longer just about what students read. They are about what students create.
